Citizens for Affordable Homes, Inc. (CAHI), is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit housing development organization started in March 1993. CAHI's mission is: to provide assistance to families with low and very-low incomes through the development of affordable homes with an emphasis on home ownership. CAHI is the leading builder of self-help homes in Nevada. CAHI's objective in the self-help program is to provide quality housing for families that want to live in a community environment. The program affords participants a tremendous sense of pride and self-esteem. Families gain more confidence, new skills and the opportunity to pursue better employment. It has been proven family participants develop a greater "sense of community" since they work together as a group in constructing all the homes in their development. This results, not only in pride of their own home but also in their neighborhood. CAHI, in the self-help process, helps with credit counseling, homebuyers counseling, develops the property, organizes owner/builders into teams and oversees the on-site construction of the homes. CAHI, during the building process, uses local vendors to purchase construction materials and utilizes the local sub contractors. The participants in this process put in their time and labor in lieu of a down payment to secure the loan and agree to work as a team to help build all the homes in their building group. Typically, homes are built in groups of six to eight to better control the quality of construction. Throughout the building process families must commit to 35 hours per week of productive time and must perform 65% of the labor to construct their home. |
